“Former goth”

I’ve seen a few posts on social media sites with people saying they’re a “former goth” or an “ex-goth.” What does that mean exactly? Did they eventually stop liking and listening to the music? I can understand getting tired of the same music if you’ve been listening to it for years, and potentially not enjoying the new goth music being produced, but no one ever explains what they mean when they say that so I’m curious. Is that how you all would understand it? Have any of you been seeing similar things?

Modern Goth that is experimental and different?

I'm a big fan of earlier Goth Rock that was generally darker and more experimental (Pornography by The Cure, Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees, Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division). I feel like during the 80s and 90s, the genre was full of different sounds, and there was a lot more variation. Tender Prey by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and The Great Annihilator by Swans are both great Gothic Rock albums, but they're very different in mood and sound.

I love certain modern Goth music (Have a Nice Life, Chelsea Wolfe), but most of what I've heard sounds way too much specifically like The Sisters of Mercy to me. The programmed drums, the deep vocals, the production. And don't get me wrong, The Sisters of Mercy are awesome (First and Last and Always is a great album), but it's almost like this became the expected sound for Goth Rock at some point, and many people stopped playing around with what could be done in the genre. Does anyone have any weirder, darker, or just different sounding modern Goth recommendations?

Tonight in SF slight change

We lost Voodoo Dolly due to Covid but Dead Souls will walk in line and Cult Strange has a once off set of goth covers . Steliacoom now are the opening band . And DJ Miz Margo joins the line up . It’s still going to be a great show .

Done with my jacket, for now.

Finished up about a week of on-and-off work on a leather jacket I’ve had for a while, here’s the result! Definitely gonna add more to it in the future, but I’m happy with where it’s at rn.

And before anyone asks — the ‘tranny’ pins are a bit of an edgy in-your-face kinda thing, I am very trans lol.

What’s your favorite goth song of all time? Does it differ from your actual favorite song of all time? If so, what is that song?

The Sisters' "Lucretia My Reflection", for me. My actual favourite song of all time is Depeche Mode's "It's No Good".
